• Suddenly, I started getting thousands of 404 errors. Because I use a custom 404 page, this completely destroyed my traffic tracking; I started getting 4-5000 page views per day.

I notice that right before the GET request for the undefined link is a GET request to the following:

    Host public-api.wordpress.com

    Referrer http://widgets.wp.com/likes/master.html?ver=20130620a

I turned off the WordPress “likes” option in Jetpack and the problem disappeared.

This will hopefully help others but I worry that 13,000 404s is going to really mess up my SEO. Certainly, it wrecks three years of tracking legit traffic.

Is there any way to fix my traffic stats to eliminate the bogus requests? Thanks.

Could you post your site URL here, so I can have a look? It would also be nice if you could enable Likes for a specific post, so I can run some tests and try to reproduce the issue there.

If you want your site to remain private, you can also contact us via this contact form:

    Thanks!
