• I’m posting here about my displeasure at the WordPress demand that my site pay for a commercial license. Despite an appeal, Jetpack refused to change the decision. So I’m posting here since there is no recourse elsewhere.

I believe this is an effort to generate more revenue. It is disappointing since I’m someone who’s happily used self-hosted WP for 2 decades. I don’t understand why you turn a perfectly satisfied user into an unhappy one.

MY site is not commercial. It does not sell products other than books on politics, the subject of my blog. The amount I earn from such sales is minimal, probably not more than $200/yr. The staff deciding my appeal claimed that an LLC designation indicated commercial status. I use that in case of a lawsuit for which the LLC protects any assets. The LLC does not indicate any commercial activity.

Further, there are many other plugins & Google Analytics which offer the Jetpack stats feature. So why pinch pennies from users when they can turn to numerous alternatives?

    Hello @richards1052,

Thanks for taking the time to share your concerns here: we understand this decision is disappointing, especially given the nature and long history of your site.

We did take another internal look at the classification after your previous messages. As mentioned in our direct reply, Jetpack’s commercial classification is based on several factors beyond selling products or services directly, including traction, donation solicitation, and operation under a business entity structure. Based on those criteria, the current classification for your site will remain unchanged.

We absolutely recognise that your site’s purpose is advocacy and journalism rather than traditional commercial activity, and we appreciate the work you’ve been doing over the years.

We’ve also replied to your message on X and invited you to continue the conversation with us directly there or via email if you’d like to discuss the available options further. We’re happy to help clarify anything further about the plans or Stats features, if you’re up to.

    Best wishes!
