In case anyone else finds this thread I should clarify that the break wasn’t happening when a user posted a link, but when I edited a user’s link after they posted it.
Apparently it was the “Are you sure you want to make this edit?” dialogue (which the plugin above removes) that was adding the problematic slashes.
