I’ve figured out a suitable solution and sharing here for others.What I did was upload a feature image, turn off the excerpt feature in the theme and used the “insert more tag”. This suited me well.

I put in a temp work around using co author plus and author spotlight and then some hardcode just to see if it would work. It does but I lose other features like the neat social media widgets.
Child theme sounds like the way to go. Thanks a bunch.
