Turned out to be because of Bitdefender, even with my websites excluded. Once deactivated everything worked again.

Sorry, I only just saw your reply as I did dnot receive an email. Thank you very much, I will try some of those suggestions, although I don’t understand why I only have these problems on my own PC.
Now even changes I make in pages are not being saved any more (it does say ‘saved’ but the changes are not applied). For now I will have to borrow someone elses computer to do any work…
