@cedcommerce Thanks very much! I eventually found exactly what I needed on the Basic template. There was a single_cat_title there, which I wanted, but the offending “«” and “»” needed to be removed, plus the word category.
How strange that a page labelled archive would affect a new post!

I haven’t been able to track down the right area yet but I’ll keep looking. And I posted on the support forum for the people who made the basic template.

If anyone happens to know where it is for the Twenty Sixteen theme, I might just switch to that and use it.
EDIT: Actually I’ve got to correct myself, that’s not customisable enough for me, I’ll stick with the Basic theme and see if I can find the right code to tweak. Cheers.
