Little slow on the uptake I guess.
I think the problem is that if you have the shopping cart on the same page as the “add to cart” items then you end up with the extra items being added to the cart when the page is refreshed- irrespective of the reason for the refresh
For this case I guess that my best option is to social engineer the problem by removing the show cart shortcode from the page where the donation levels are selected. This seems to avoid the problem but it adds a bit of uncertainty for the users and requires them to then “click here” to go to the cart… then adjust quantities… then go to checkout etc…
I do see that woothemes sells a one page cart addon so they must have figured this out somehow.

Yes I have WP as a multisite install with the subdomain.maindomain.com format
Ah, I see… I had “network activated” the plugin
fyi if you do that then it will only work on one site at a time
now when I activate the plugin one at a time they all work fine
