The site we tested had no plugins and the default theme. We simply deleted all the files (nothing of consequence the the wp-content file) and reinstalled WP.

The other sites all fail with all plugins de-activated and with a default theme.

We have full backups, but have never tried (or needed) to restore anything. We are trying to get help with that now.

We are not sure if it is the same or something else. However, we just installed WordPress from a minor site with no content. The reinstall resolved the issue. We are now considering doing the same on the other 6 sites, but are not certain if that is the right path.

The sites stopped working with 4.1. We had hoped the 4.1.1 updates would bring a fix to our issue. We had thought it was a broad issue. Now it looks like we own it alone. We suspect something is going on with the root files. Maybe moving one of the sites to a new host will show if that is the case or not.

All the site run individually on 4.1.1. Five different ones all with the same issue.

Oddly, or maybe a clue, is one of them is in a sub-directory and WordPress works as expected.
