but there is some other plugin that does a similar job ?
Feel free to search for them. I’m not aware of any other plugins which use the Yahoo Smush.it service API. There are a few other plugin which do this image optimization locally on your server. But those require you have certain PHP and server libraries installed for the image manipulations.
The settings in the “settings” is correct?
you might consider increasing the value for the timeout from 60 seconds to 120. But still there are going to be issues with the Yahoo! service blocking you from using the API after too many images are processed. We don’t have any control over the blocking.
Yeah, Yahoo! has some service restrictions. If they think you are trying to push through too many images to process they will throttle your request. nothing much can be done about it. And at the moment there is no background or automated processing.
I delete the plugin and reinstall?
No. Doubtful that will resolve anything.
Try this. Go to Settings > Media. There you will see the section for the Smush.it plugin. Check the timeout value. What do you have there? Also there is a checkbox to enable debug output. Save the settings.
Next go to Media > Library. Select a row for an item not previously smushed. Set the checkbox in the first column for that row. Above the listing you will see the drop down actions. Select ‘Bulk Smish.it’ from the drop down. Then click the apply button. This will bulk process the one selected image.
This is NOT the same as clicking the smash.it option in the last column of the row.
When the bulk smash.it runs you will see some debug output. Paste it back here for our review.
I have the latest version of wordpress on mac.
Might be somewhat of a clue. When you say ‘on mac’ are you running WordPress on your local mac machine? Or is your hosting a Mac server?
The difference is if you are running on your local laptop then Smush.it will not work since the Yahoo! service cannot access your images.
In more detail. When you run the bulk Smush.it the plugin dents the URL for your image to the remote Yahoo! service. The service then uses the URL to access your image in order to perform the needed processing. So it is important that the image be available on the public internet.
I think it’s because the original files weren’t deleted?
A point of clarification from the previous response. When the Smush.it plugin processes an image it replaces the original image on your server. The plugin does not keep the original image.
You can deactivate the plugin and nothing will happen to the processed image.
When the plugin initially processes the images the new reduced image replaces the old larger image on your server. The plugin does not alter anything about the image within the WordPress path, etc. So it is safe to deactivate the image at will.
How GTmetrix.com or YSlow or similar tool grade your overall site performance is not really something we can provide an answer.
But for the media that is processed with the Smush.it tool you can go to Media > Library. In the last column there will be a report of how much the individual image was reduced. Depending on the image this could be somewhere between 10 and 50%.
You will need maybe to go check the forums for that firewall plugins and ask them why they are flagging the URL as a potential issue? There is nothing wrong with that URL that I can see. There are dozens of ‘security’ plugins out there that seem to provide too many false positives than anything else.
So let me break down the URL:
http://www.filmbuffon line.com/FBOLNewsreel/wordpress/wp-admin/admin.php – Assumed this is the URL for your admin Dashboard.
action=wp_smushit_manual = Parameter added because you chose to do a manual smash.it.
attachment_ID=31313 = This is the ID of the image post your chose to process.
So again I’m confused why it is flagging the URL as SQL injection.
One way to find out. Please go to Settings > Media. Find the Smush.it related section. There you will see the drop down to control the Smush.it plugin. Turn off the auto process on upload. Save the settings.
Now when you attempt to upload images do you still get redirected?
Thanks for writing. The Smush.it plugin is simply a tool to use the online Yahoo Smush.it API service. So basically the plugin calls an external URL (the API) and passes a URL to your image. All compression and validation is performed on the remote Yahoo service.
This is the same as you uploading the images directly to Yahoo Smush.it http://www.smushit.com/ysmush.it/ and then uploading the processed image to your site.
So long answer for a short question. The answer is there are no configurable options to increase compression.
@debbie Doglady,
You really want to disable the Smush.it debug output when you are enabling processing during the upload. The debug output is seen as an error by WordPress. Go to Settings > Media and uncheck the debug output. Then try the upload again.
Hi there @aschx, Just reading parts of this thread to get caught up on the issue.
This is the error I get in JavaScript Console when attempting to do a bulk smush on just any single PNG file: Console Error
The Smush.it plugin doesn’t use and JavaScript. So if you are seeing a JS error this might be an indications of the issue.
What version of WordPress? Multisite ore regular?
What other plugins are you running? Specifically, what other plugins might be also trying to filter media items?
Are you seeing the error both when uploading new images as well as bulk smash.it actions on existing images?
Try this. Go to Settings > Media on that page you will see a section for Smush.it. There is a checkbox to enable debug mode. This will output some details on the plugin API communication with Yahoo. Save the settings.
Next go to Media > Library. Find a PNG item in the listing which has not be processed via Smush.it. Set the checkbox in the first column of that row. Above the listing is the actions drop down. From the drop down select Bulk Smush.it then click the ‘Apply’ button next to it. This will bulk smush a single image.
You will see some debug output like the following
http://screencast.com/t/mM5sykM71NAlso, I enabled auo-smush.it on upload and get the same success results.
http://screencast.com/t/wKM9MB5fMore then likely this is something with your specific server or WordPress configuration. As we are not seeing the same errors when attempting to process the same image.
