Yeah they should, because HTML is used in all themes, well at least to accomplish what I think you want to do.
Anyway I see the created thing in your footer, so it looks like you got it right. BTW make sure that theme allows you to remove the copyright as not all of them do..

Not sure if it will work, but did you try adding the tags via the widget option? Or did you do that already and they still don’t show up?
