Sampression, I thought I replied months ago, but I guess I didn’t. This worked perfectly to remove the bullets from the widgets.
This code alone, however, didn’t remove the padding that came along with the bullets. That’s really not a problem, but I couldn’t figure it out. If you’re interested, you can see what I mean in the sidebar widget Latest Galleries at hissing lawns.

So I tried changing the permissions — currently set at 755 — using net2ftp (Dreamhost’s web-based ftp), but got an error message that the change could only be done with a UNIX server, not a Windows one. (Exact message: “Note that the CHMOD command is only available on Unix FTP servers, not on Windows FTP servers.”)
I guess I’m sort of lost about where to click to open or select the wp-content directory so that I can change it.
