Mark.Hi @aifx, thank you for reaching out.
Please make sure to click and download backups of the
.htaccessand/or.user.inifiles when prompted. The Continue button will only activate once these downloads are complete. After downloading, you can safely click Continue to complete the setup. You can read more on this here: https://www.wordfence.com/help/firewall/optimizing-the-firewall/

Mark.Hi @ealex,
Thanks for reaching out. I’m happy to provide you instructions on how to get back in.There are 2 ways to get back into the site.
The first way is if you have added the site in Wordfence Central (a free site management tool in your account on wordfence.com).
- Login to Wordfence.com and look for the Configuration tab.
- Click the gear icon at the end of the row that the site you need to access is on.
- Scroll down to the Login Security Options section and expand it by clicking the small black arrow to the right.
- In the section that says “Allowlisted IP addresses that bypass 2FA” add your public facing IP address.
NOTE : You can get your public facing IP by clicking this link.. - Scroll back to the top of the screen and save the changes.
You should now be able to login to your site with just a username and password.
If you haven’t added your site to Wordfence Central follow these steps.- Please use FTP/SFTP — or any file manager your web host provides via their administration panel.
- Look inside the /wp-content/plugins/ directory and rename the wordfence directory to wordfence.bak. This will deactivate Wordfence and allow you to login without the 2FA code.
- Once you have logged in to your WordPress admin you can name the folder back to wordfence again.
- Go to your user profile and add 2FA back to your account, making sure to download the backup codes in case of problems in the future.
Thanks,
Mark.
Hi @jamessf, sorry to see you’re having problems with this.
We have seen possible issues installing keys automatically more than 24 hours after generation. Additionally, if you are in a different browser than the one used when requesting your Free Wordfence license, you will be unable to automatically install it. In those cases you will need to manually copy and paste the key from the email to complete the activation of Wordfence Security.
Aside from verifying that you did not inadvertently copy only part of the license key, I would check whether you can install the license when Wordfence is the only active plugin on your site. There could be a Javascript conflict with another plugin potentially stopping the code executing the verification check.
If nothing above seems to help, let me know as we may need to obtain some further diagnostic information to take a look.
Thanks,Mark.
Hi @botzbachryan, thank you for reaching out.
I’m sorry to hear you’re running into issues. Could you share the exact error message you’re seeing so I can help you better?
In the meantime, If you’d like to permanently remove Wordfence, or perform a clean reinstallation, you can enable the “Delete Wordfence tables and data on deactivation” option.Alternatively, you can use the Wordfence Assistant plugin. This tool was specifically developed to help resolve issues that can’t be addressed directly from the Wordfence interface. You can install it from the Plugins page in your WordPress dashboard and use it to remove all Wordfence data from your site.
Thanks,
Mark.Hi @proverbs31woman, I am happy to help.
The message from the plugin states that Wordfence is unable to check on your behalf whether messages we send have arrived. We don’t try to connect to your mail server, it means that we can’t tell if the message was successful, dropped by a spam filter, or bounced for another reason.
Please make sure to check your spam folder or if your primary email isn’t receiving the confirmation, try using a different email address.
Thanks,
MarkHi @instantclassic,
Thank you for reaching out.
Unfortunately, you cannot block an IP using templates on Wordfence Central. You can only block an IP address from the “Blocking” tab at the top of the “Firewall” page and then use the “Block Type” button that says “IP Address”. Make sure that you know that the IP address is malicious before you block it.You can also block an IP address on the Live Traffic tool page, with instructions on the documentation page here – https://www.wordfence.com/help/tools/live-traffic/#understanding-a-live-traffic-record
Hopefully we can add this feature in a future release.
Thanks,
Mark

MarkHi @knockerrn, thank you for reaching out.
Have you tried starting scans remotely from the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics > Debugging Options section? Does the exact same issue occur? There are other scan troubleshooting tips here: https://www.wordfence.com/help/scan/troubleshooting/
Could you do the following steps for me:
- Go to the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page
- In the “Debugging Options” section check the circle “Enable debugging mode”
- Click to “Save Changes”.
- CANCEL any current scan and start a NEW scan
- Copy the last 20 lines from the Log (click the “Show Log” link) or so of the activity log once the scan finishes and paste them in this post.
Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostic > Debugging Screenshot
This will help me see exactly what is happening when the scan fails.
Then, can you send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.
NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email
Thanks,
Mark.
Hi @rachaelpainter ,
Thank you for reaching out.
Could you try loading the page while keeping a Browser Console open to see if you can detect any JavaScript errors or files that fail to load. If you see any red text in the console, please take a screenshot of it and send it to me so I can take a look.
You could also try clearing cache (site plugins and local browser) and disabling all other plugins except for Wordfence, then trying again to see if there’s a plugin or theme conflict causing the issue. You could also revert to a default theme, such as Twenty Twenty-Three.
If it works as expected, reenable your plugins and theme one by one until the issue recurs to help find the cause.
If all fails, I would suggest changing the Wordfence Web Application Firewall into Learning Mode. From the Wordfence Dashboard, click on Manage WAF. Then you will see Basic Firewall Options > Web Application Firewall Status. Change the option to Learning Mode. Now confirm that it works as expected. Once done, switch the WAF from Learning Mode back to Enabled and Protecting and test to see that you can still login.
https://www.wordfence.com/help/firewall/learning-mode/ is an amazing resource for learning more about the WAF and learning mode.
Let me know how it goes.
Thanks,
Mark.
Hi @marcopolo11 ,
Please access wp-admin while keeping a Browser Console open to see if you can detect any JavaScript errors or files that fail to load. If you see any red errors in the console, please take a screenshot and send it to me.If the above steps fail, run Wordfence as your only-enabled plugin and revert to a default theme such as Twenty Twenty-Three to see if there’s a plugin or theme conflict causing the issue. If you are now able to loh in, re-enable your plugins and theme one by one until the error recurs to help find the plugin causing the conflict.
Thanks,
Mark.

Thank you for reaching out. I am happy to help.
Are you by any chance using a modified WordPress login page? Please note that our Google reCAPTCHA feature currently only works for the default WordPress login and registration pages and also the default WooCommerce login and registration page so it may not work on custom login and registration pages generated by your theme or other plugins.
Thanks,
Mark.
