I tried disabling all the plugins, and the slideshow still came up black. i think it has to do with some other javascript? i deleted some of it and the page said “flash player required and browser with java capabilities needed” but i have have both of those things enabled. so it musy be something else.

thanks for the quick feedback everyone! it is working now.
the problem was indeed that it was not properly saved as an .ico file… somehow the photoshop plugin i used to make that file did not work. but i converted it using the site that you linked above and it works now.
