It works, but doesn’t validate as XHTML Strict because of the < before ?php.
How can I escape that ? ?

That second < is actually:
<'
I wouldn’t use it unless you knew what it did.
Do a little research on it and make up your mind as to whether you’ll be making use of it, or just pointlessly linking to something.
As for me, I won’t be using this on most of my themes (unless someone points out a good reason I should), but I can think of a few times when it would be ridiculously cool. 🙂
