A few more things (as stated in other posts):
- Make sure that mod_rewrite is at the bottom of your php info page
- Make sure to periodically restart MAMP after your changes

Scratch that. GOT IT! The codex tutorial is good, just leaves a little info out – it seems that updating your permalinks is a default way to update your htaccess file.
