I solved my problem (sort of) by converting the close.png to close.gif. No problems in IE8 or Mozilla Firefox. I did try manipulating the .png (removing alpha channel, solid background) but still didn’t work.
My advice, if the navigation buttons are acting up, convert them to .gif (you can maintain transparency).

I use 3.0.3.2 and I have a similar problem: in IE8 the close.png (the close X) for a shadowboxed image is very hard to select. Most of the time, a text select cursor appears as I hover over the image. Sometimes, if I move the cursor to the very top left of the close.png image, the white select glove appears and the function works. Curiously, if use the text select cursor to try and select and copy some “invisible” text (to the left of the close.png image), upon pasting I get this {searchTerms}. The behavior is very quirky.
To see this in action using IE8…go to the author’s web site and select an image example…then try to close the image using the X.
In Mozilla Firefox everything works perfectly.
Any thoughts about getting this to work well in IE8? I’m going to try playing with the shadowbox.css settings.
