A little feedback, if you will oblige me. It’s nothing personal at all, you have been most polite.

Having since paid £50 for 30 minutes with Siteground, it seems we were actually very close to resolving the issue, but for a very small amount of extra guidance. My feeling from past experience is that the help provided on this forum is for those with some knowledge, whereas the people who most need it are in my position.

I very much appreciate that this help given without charge and I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, I just wonder if it’s sometimes easy to forget what it was like when you (meaning anyone here, not you specifically) were first learning. Perhaps many of you took to it more naturally than myself.

My main suggestion is that when advice is given, it should match the requester’s level of knowledge.

This may mean that you need to state the ‘obvious’ sometimes. For example, I was told : Have you been able to access wp-config.php and customize it in the meantime? What does debug.log say?

So I looked for something called debug.log. Instead, as I have since been told, there are two error files, but called something different – php_errorlog files – one is located in the public_html folder, and the other is located in the wp-admin folder (within public_html). It would have helped to know that.

And I don’t think it was unreasonable for me to ask for some extra guidance in overcoming the issue with the code editing.

As I said, I appreciate it must be frustrating for support volunteers here when there is a query from someone like me, but it has been a frightening experience and WordPress support has left me feeling discarded just when we were getting somewhere.

Thanks anyway, and I wish you well.

I keep finding new info! I’m with Siteground and this is their process:

    https://www.siteground.co.uk/kb/wordpress_configuration_filewpconfigphp/#:~:text=The%20WordPress%20configuration%20file%2C%20named,edit%20your%20wp%2Dconfig%20file.

    They say:

    ‘FTP

Once you’ve modified wp-config.php on your computer, you should upload the updated file back to your website via FTP.

Reconnect to your website through an FTP account, navigate to the root directory, and upload the wp-config.php file.’

But I was trying to avoid this FTP thing? Do I really need to do this?

Further info – there was clearly an issue with the copy-pasting of the code, because I subsequently wasn’t able to even view my website.

So I’ve removed the code and can now view it again.

I’ve seen somewhere about using a code editor, but it feels like yet another step I’ve no idea about. I will look into it more in the morning but meanwhile, if you have any advice on how to resolve the problem without the use of a code editor, I’d be most grateful.

All part of the learning curve, I guess.

Thanks for explaining that. Frustrating. I’ve also had someone emailing me directly.

    I’ve customised wp-config.php but I can’t find debug.log in the wp-content folder.

Just wondering, when I copy-pasted your text, it looked slightly different when pasted – particularly the quotation marks. Could that be the problem and if so, what should I do? Manually adjust the code? I know these things can be sensitive.

A stupid afterthought, but I did save it after editing – seemed the only logical thing to do?

It was something to do with going to a file in my host file manager and renaming plugins to plugins disabled, or similar.

Sorry, I only read it briefly before replying and losing the comment.

I seem to have lost part of this thread – I had some alternative advice from someone similar to @whjoeyfry, I think.

Please, can this be reinstated? I was just sending a reply and it errored.

It was about an alternative method to the wp-config.php one, seeing as I believe the issue was caused by a plugin update.

    Thank you both.

I will need to try this tomorrow and will advise if further support is needed.

OK I have navigated to the wp-config.php file on my host’s page. Trust me, that’s quite an achievement for me, just to give you an idea of my knowledge level.

So, next question: There are 4 blocks of code I see in the’Debugging in WordPress’ support document. Do I paste them all in? Simultaneously? Or one at a time. I just don’t want to mess this up.

Because I have not got a back up, don’t know how to take one with this error, and I have no idea what a staging environment is. NOTE: Before making any modifications to your website, verify that you have either utilized a staging environment or taken an appropriate backup of your site.’

    Thanks

    Thank you Steven,

The server’s error log says there are no errors found on my website.

How does this affect the advice you have given? Should I still contact the host? It’s not as if I can’t FIND the error log, it just tells me there are no errors.

Apologies, but I am very unconfident in this and appreciate your patience.

    Thanks Denzel,

I obviously didn’t describe things clearly.

I have been using this function for months so yes, I always click on the cogwheel icon.

I noticed yesterday that this now does NOT bring up the link text box, only the url box and the little box to open in a new window.

I haven’t activated any new plug ins either, so I’m at a loss to understand what is happening.

Any further suggestions would be mostg welcome.

    Regards
    Sara

    Acknowledged…rookie oversight 🙂

Thank you for your reassurance and for persevering with this.

When I’m home later, I’ll put your workaround into practice, and look at the WP Core Trac issue too.

I’m assuming you’ll now close this thread, so if I notice further issues with hyperlinks, I’ll open a new thread – I trust that’s the correct ‘protocol’!

    Thanks again,

The previous post links to the test article it seems.

I did the same as before – seriously.

I do apologise, this has just made me look like an idiot, and I’m not.

I don’t want to believe that it’s my computer as it’s quite new…

    Anyway, see how you go.

    Thanks
