Okay, I have figured out what causes the problem. If I have a photo at the very top of the story using the standard WordPress image function, the above problem happens. If I move the image down a paragraph, the teaser displays and there is only one ‘read more’ link. However, then a empty “box” appears within the actual article where the image would be.

Turns out the template I was using had a lot of z-index’s in the CSS. I zapped most of those and that seems to have done the trick.
