ok solved, you need to add this plugin to use the cat parameter as above.

I’ve found a page which gives an answer to my question but the method doesn’t work on my site.
I’m using the code <?php wp_get_archives('type=monthly&cat=5'); ?> since I know my category ID = 5 for past shows. Is this code obselete or am I using it wrong?
