This was a case of user error. I was expecting that clicking the link would do something good, like subscribing to the feed (i.e. adding a Firefox Live Bookmark).
In fact, the correct thing to do in Firefox is to
1. Right Click on the feed link.
2. Copy link location.
3. Bookmarks – Manage Bookmarks
4. File – New Live Bookmark
5. Paste the copied link into the Feed Location box.
Seems terribly obvious now.
The next step will be to get the Live Bookmark icon working in the status bar.
