SOLVED … though the reason it broke in the first place still is unclear, which is unsatisfactory.

Disconnect jetpack from WordPress, deactivate Jetpack, delete Jetpack, reinstall Jetpack, activate Jetpack and reconnect to WordPress. Reset all the original settings (which you should have noted down in advance). After 24 hours the stats appear now to be within 3% of the totally independent Goatcounter figures which is acceptable (they count bots and visitors slightly differently).

I highly recommend Goatcounter. It does one thing and it does it very well.

I’ve tried disconnecting jetpack, deleting the plugin and reinstalling … and the counts are today only 25% of those recorded by Goatcounter (which have been consistently accurate for months). I’ll monitor things for a day or two and then decide whether I’d be better off without Jetpack.

The statistics on the post are now being counted again.

What HAS changed? The access logs rotated? Can’t imagine how that might have had any influence. No edits were made to the page.

It looks as though at least 1000-1500 page views to the post on Friday and Saturday were uncounted.

If this sort of apparently random variation occurs – perhaps for shorter periods – can the access stats through Jetpack be trusted? Even for week by week or month by month comparisons?

    Now investigating alternative solutions …

Not marking this as resolved as I have received no response and I believe the problem still exists.

    Done a bit more reading.

I’ve not edited wp_footer() or changed anything in the sidebar. I’ve not changed my theme and use the current version of Twenty Twelve (v.3.3).

I wrote the post in the same way I always do – no edits to HTML, standard editor.

As far as I’m aware I’ve not changed the site in the last week, though a few plugins may have been auto-updated.

Checking the Apache logs shows the page has been accessed ~100 times per hour since posting (7 hours ago) … but Jetpack has only recorded two visits.

With many thanks for any insight into this.
    David
