Chip, thank you for this tip. Going from http://www.url.com to dev.url.com works, because the domains are the same length, but going from dev.url.com to staging.url.com did not for the reasons you cited above. Another easy solution if you are doing something like I am – make it stg.url.com or something the same length and just skip all this!
