The page load time or server resources are not the problem. The real problem is that we have our WP setup on a cluster of load-balanced servers. As the images for the articles are originally uploaded, they exist on our primary server and are then cached to our CDN with the total cache plugin. Therefore, the major problem occurs when users access our site and make this AJAX request on one of our balanced servers that is not the original server with the images, so the images are broken for that user, when they should instead successfully load from the CDN.
