After some googling of what you described, I was able to follow this guide: https://travis.media/how-to-setup-and-use-jquery-in-your-wordpress-theme/
And created a dummy script within my theme to simply print ‘hi’ to console. That got it going. Thanks!
Thanks for the fast reply. Can you clarify what this means? A quick google suggests WordPress already has jQuery built in, in no-conflict mode.
