My problem is just the opposite my date defaults to Jan 1 1970.

I finally had to just FTP the files to my site. I could not figure why the automatic update did not work. Now I cannot access the domain. I can login to the admin area but unable to view my domain itself.
I had the same problem but realized that it has to have a blogspot address for the import to work. I changed by settings to a blogspot blog and imported and then changed back to what I normally use with blogger. Hope this helps
