Thank you for your so nicely worded post. I had the exact same problem including the part where you downloaded new FTP clients just in case the ones you use don’t work. (as he laughs at himself. . .)

My hosting company (yahoo) kept replying with “localhost” during the installation, but then, I found one of their help files labeled “Why Can’t I Access My Database?”.
It said to use (‘DB_HOST’, ‘mysql’) and not ‘localhost’ in the wp-config.php file.
Worked for me…
