The errors are gone again. And the updating works again.

I can confirm this. I experienced the same error on multiple websites.
In my case this error was given (on multiple websites) when trying to update Yoast. While updating Wordfence worked just fine. So I assume it only affects certain servers.
When trying to update several times the errors also cycled between:
“An error occurred while updating Yoast SEO: Download failed. cURL error 35: OpenSSL SSL_connect: SSL_ERROR_SYSCALL in connection to downloads.wordpress.org:443”
And “Yoast SEO: Download failed. cURL error 56: Recv failure: Connection reset by peer”
