I was getting the same error just now on my web host. At the time it was running with php 4.4.1. I switched it to 5.2.5 and boom, it started working just like that.
So does this mean that WordPress is not compatible with PHP version 4.4.1 or is it no longer compatible with 4.x or perhaps this was just an odd fluke on the part of my webhost’s php setup?
It was awardspace, btw.
