Thanks so much – it worked! I suspected that the problem was with the theme, but had no idea how to switch to the default theme via FTP. Once I followed your advice, I was able to login to wp-admin and finish the upgrade. All the plugins were up-to-date, but my version of the Arras theme had a known conflict with the new WP. I should’ve checked the Arras forum for compatibility issues before upgrading…
Lessons learned:
1) Never upgrade WP automatically, only manually!
2) Before upgrading, besides backing up your database, make sure all your plugins and themes are compatible with the new WP.
