After trying countless options the simple solution for this was…
wait for it…..
creating a new folder, setting permissions, deleting the old uploads folder, renaming new folder back to uploads. Gee willikers Beav!
I feel so stupid after trying all of the technical suggestions of this and that.
The so called “5 minute WP install” is not a full disclosure! Nonetheless I am happy with WP and my new forum.

That fixed it. I would have thought that my upload of the WP Forum file from WP Plugins would have been the latest version. Obviously it wasn’t. Thanks!
