Well I have managed to resolve my own problem using the following plugin: – Restrict Page Editing 1.0 Restricts users from editing Pages unless they have edit_others_pages capability By Owen Winkler.
This seems to be working fine in combination with the Role Manager plugin also by Owen Winkler
