problem solved. it was a cache problem with W3 Total Cache. I deactivated the plugin without success. Then I deleted the plugin. Didn’t help either. Turns out the plugin leaves a trail in .htaccess. I manually edited the file and removed the cache references.
issue update: the problem seems to be happening only on the home page now.
why would that site be restored, but not the others. sounds unlikely, but thanks anyway.
