Problem now solved (with thanks to Greg at WPJobBoard).
It relates to the WPLANG constant in the wp-config.php file. This needs to be set to en_GB – see http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress_in_Your_Language#Single-Site_Installations for more information.
