Thank you, @shahzeenfarooq. In the meantime, I had found this add_filter() one-liner in Astra documentation that resolved the problem to our satisfaction: Show Password Eye Icon Not Visible. The blank button no longer appears, and a togglable eye icon appears in the password field instead.
A bit of CSS (needs some additional testing/tweaking) made the dot characters (when password is masked) distinct and ambiguous characters (e.g. lowercase L, number 1, etc.) more legible when unmasked. By default, the masked password characters appeared almost like a solid line.

@shahzeenfarooq, thank you for the troubleshooting detail!

We have a staging site and:

    1. Created a new test page without Elementor, added the WooCommerce classic checkout, published the page, set the test page to be the checkout page in WooCommerce settings, and purged cache. The “show password” button still appeared blank.
    2. Set Twenty Twenty-Five as the active theme and purged cache. A test showed no “show password” button and instead, a “show password” slashed-eye/eye (changes when clicked and the password is hidden/shown) icon appeared directly in the password field in the far right.

It seems the problem is related to the Astra theme.
