But the client will be adding more child pages themselves and they are not going to be able to, know how to or want to edit the function with additional id numbers. Now if there was a parameter that said ‘exclude_child_of’, then that would be great.

Always the same, no sooner you post asking for help, you manage to resolve the problem you’ve just spent the last few hours trying to solve. In this case a plugin.
