Removing the .php in the permalinks settings didn’t help; same result.

I had to create the /wp-content/upgrade directory (it was not present), set permissions to 777, then update the permissions in wp-content/plugins to 777 as well. Finally, I emptied /wp-content/cache – and plugins are now updating successfully.

Hi Neil – Can you post your site URL and I’ll take a look at it? We should recognize any valid RSS/Atom feed, so my first guess would be that your feed contains invalid XML for some reason. Should be easily fixed, I’ll be happy to check it out for you.
