Thanks. That has worked.
To be clear, for anyone else with this issue, the options in customize-blog posts are
– small featured images, or
– large featured images
And other than the size of the images, this changes the image position:
– small featured images are shown to the left of the post
– large featured images are shown on top of the post
Awesome – it works now.
The problem was a double-colon in the example in post #5 above – the CSS was being skipped.
