How do you update from 3.5.1 when you are getting “installation failed”?

I’m using 3.5.1 . How do I update to 3.9.1 when I am getting installation failed. I am the new person managing it. So I am learning wordpress on my own. This is the first time I have used this CMS.
I have the same issue as well. When I try to update the WordPress to version 3.9.1 it says installation failed and I also get various plug in errors when trying to update those. I am the 2nd person to start managing the website for my client and I can’t tell which type of version the site is currently using. Is this a dashboard update or something over all? I also see that the WordPress Theme is Weaver II Pro 1.2.7 . Does that mean that I am working with something that is version 1.2.7 ?
