Changing the PHP version in use from 7.0.2 to 5.6.17 solves the issue, so I guess it’s an incompatibility with the newest version.

Forgot to add: I have already followed the recommendations in similar errors: deactivating, deleting and reinstalling the plugin, I have even reinstalled 4.4.1. I have checked permissions and so on.
