Yes, mainly due to the more tech-savvy assistance of my brother he got it sliding. I edited the line of plain text with the html that works on the live site and it switched to list mode. I’d touched nothing else so assumed the html had caused the problem. I deleted the html but it stubbornly persisted as a list. I should have checked the settings, you were of course right and all is now well (and I’ve rechecked and of course the html works fine, no idea how I managed to change the mode).

Thanks so much for your patience.

    Regards

PS I should mention that GS did get back to me after I’d posted that they hadn’t!

I assume the problem lies with my lack of experience with Elementor. Did my explanation of how I tried to install DNT match how you tested it? I suspect I’ve missed a crucial step.

I disabled the other plugins but still no sign of DNT, there’s not even any space for it although on the Elementor edit page there is a narrow greyed out box with a faint W (wordpress logo), and when I right click on the ‘i’ popup it opens an ‘Edit Ditty News Ticker’ box, with the title of the ticker I’ve created selected (in the edit box).

You can see the page (still being developed) at citizensadvicecopeland.org.uk/staging but there’s no trace of the DNT. It should appear under ‘Donate and help us keep giving advice for free’, you’ll see what I’m trying to emualate at the live site; citizensadvicecopeland.org.uk

Hi and thanks for the concern. I’ve not heard from the GS developer. I’ve decided that as my theme (a custom brand theme for our charity) has not been updated for five years, it is probably the cause and these conflicts are only going to get worse. Not having the skills or inclination to try and repair this elderly theme I’m rebuilding the site (Astra theme and Elementor builder) which will hopefully be maintained and do away with these updating problems.

Coincidentally I’ve just been trying to install DNT in my new front page (by dragging and dropping the DNT element from the WordPress list in the Elementor elemnts). It appears as a block with a wp logo, the editor takes me to the correct ticker info but there is nothing displayed on the published page. Any suggestions welcomed?

Hi and thanks for the prompt testing and suggestions.
The php version is 7.4.16 (and the ‘php compatibility checker’ plugin doesn’t identify any issues)
I have double checked and the tickers are fine. As I mentioned, the update went smoothly and I’m now running 2.3.8 without the stacking problem (unfortunately without any idea how it healed). The problem now is that the plugin conflicts with the update of GS Logo Slider from 1.8.16 to 3.0.4, but several other plugins also conflict with that update.
I’m hoping that the GS Logo Slider Developer might throw some light on the issue. I’ll let you know if I get a resolution.

You asked me to update you:

As you suggested I installed jQuery Migrate; after over a week there have been zero deprecations (I unchecked live admin page deprecations to get a listing, but nothing).

I installed a Staging Site (sandpit) and investigated both DNT and another plugin that I can’t update without a conflict (which includes removing the ticker). The plugin is GS Logo slider; the update reports ‘Can’t load jquery’ ~ that remains unresolved.

I retried the DNT update and it worked without a problem, however I’ve no idea why as I don’t recollect doing anything significant. I tried to replicate the problem with jQuery Migrate deactivated in case something had been happening under the bonnet, but again it updated smoothly, so that remains a mystery.

Because I still had a problem with the other plugin I tried to install a different theme (2021) as suggested in your conflict checker. That produced a front page empty except for the top menu; the menu links took me out of the staging site to the live site so it looks like it would need a lot of configuration work to populate the theme.

I then deactivated all the plugins to test the update of the GS Logo Slider. Without any plugins activated it updated OK. On reactivating DNT that caused the conflict, but so did half of the other plugins. Reverting to the earlier version of GSLS all works as expected. If you have any suggestions I’d be grateful but it looks like I need to get back to the GSLS developer.

Hi t-p. I summonsed courage to do the recommended manual backup and manual update and all went well but no change, ie fault persisted. Just found a post about the AIO wp-security plugin; many others had the same problem, now resolved with a plugin update. Now having the skill to turn plugins on and off from the cpanel I was able to get back in and update the plugin and all is now well.

Thanks for your prompt response t-p.

I wonder whether it would be practical to reinstall the 5.6.2 version of wp initially instead of 5.7 (using the process at the ‘Manual Update’ link) and then updating to 5.7? If anything goes awry it might make it easier to diagnose the cause with less changes happening simultaneously (new version plus risk of me causing problems).

I do have a current back-up but it’s via the ‘AIO-wp-migration’ plug-in, so until I can acccess my site it’s unusable; hopefully it won’t be necessary though.

One of the steps (for manual update) is ‘deactivate plugins’. As I don’t have access to my dashboard will renaming the plugin folder be adequate?

Is there a way to put the site into maintenance mode from the cpanel while I do this?

    Hi Mark
Thanks for your patience. I have now resolved it, with apologies. I read an article on .htaccess and discovered to my surprise that there can be several of them on a site. I rechecked your article, pointing me to the public root. Since unsuccessfully looking there I switched on ‘hidden files’ and then found and edited a version of .htaccess in the site root (believing that to be the only one at the time). Now having actually followed your advice and found the public root version of .htaccess, the code worked exactly as you advise.
    Unfortunately another case of ‘RTFI’

    Hi Mark
I did have all the code in the .htaccess, but my site had a fault yesterday, purely coincidentally, due to a conflict with a plugin update. Before diagnosing the cause I deleted that code from the .htaccess in case that contributed (it didn’t).
I can however confirm that the code I had was the code I pasted above so it read, including the original code:
    # Really Simple SSL
    Header always set Strict-Transport-Security: “max-age=31536000” env=HTTPS
    Header always set Content-Security-Policy “upgrade-insecure-requests”
    Header always set X-Content-Type-Options “nosniff”
    Header always set X-XSS-Protection “1; mode=block”
Header always set Expect-CT “max-age=7776000, enforce”
    Header always set Referrer-Policy: “no-referrer-when-downgrade”
    # End Really Simple SSL

    # Added by provider
    Options +Indexes

    Thanks for your patience Mark.
I’ve retyped the code, using the CPanel text editor. I confirm that the encoding was UTF8 and the quote marks were vertical. I entered and tested the code lines one at a time, with hard refresh and cache bypass. No site crash this time (I’ve no idea what the difference is this time as I used the CPanel editor previously) and no suspicious behaviour with any of the code lines. However even though the site is working fine, I still get the same Site Health Status report ‘Not all recommended security headers are installed’ and then lists all six that the code should have installed.
My assumption is that the subsequent instruction:
    # Added by provider
    Options +Indexes
must over-ride the new code lines?
I think it’s time to draw comfort from your opening observation, ‘the security headers aren’t required, but a nice to have’ and live with it (unless you have any suggestions?)

    Hi Rogier,
I entered the code in two ways, firstly by pasting from Notepad++ encoded as utf8 and then after the site crash recovery, by typing directly into the cpanel text editor. As a result I believed them to be the correct form of quote marks. It looks like pasting them into the message box changed their appearance, although pasting the code again into the message box below, the quote marks are vertical (before clicking submit). Now having clicked submit the published version shows the quotes inclined, though now I’m editing they are vertical again. So I think they are OK but would welcome advice if the text editors I’ve used are inadequate.

    Hi Mark
    Thanks for the reply.

The code I used was from the link you recommended. My default code is:
    # Added by provider
    Options +Indexes

The code I added (from the link) was:
    # Really Simple SSL
    Header always set Strict-Transport-Security: “max-age=31536000” env=HTTPS
    Header always set Content-Security-Policy “upgrade-insecure-requests”
    Header always set X-Content-Type-Options “nosniff”
    Header always set X-XSS-Protection “1; mode=block”
Header always set Expect-CT “max-age=7776000, enforce”
    Header always set Referrer-Policy: “no-referrer-when-downgrade”
    # End Really Simple SSL

I included the ‘Content-Security-Policy’ code as although not included in the composite at the bottom of the link it was listed in the individual examples above. I have tried both pasting in (from Notepad++) then when that created the error, I typed it in via the Cpanel editor (in case there were any encoding issues). Both had the same results.

Absolutely spot on. Found it and fixed it. I’d been looking for the problem for weeks but never thought to look inside the widget code. Very grateful.
