The SiteGround SG Optimizer plugin has a lazy load feature that seems to have been causing the problem. I set the plugin to exclude the slide-image class from lazy load and it resolved the issue so that I can get the other benefits of that plugin.
… just in case anyone else has this problem.
Looks like there may be a conflict with the SG Optimizer plugin. Disabling that plugin makes the post slider work correctly.
Thanks for the response, Edward. I’m not sure if it was a browser cache issue with the 404 message, but when I went to check on this again, the staff page was showing up on the slug that I set in the admin settings.
