I believe there sorting categories is not part of the default installation of the WP eCommerce plugin.
You would need to get a plugin or modify the WP eCommerce plugin itself.

There are database routines that needs to be run in some of the version of WPEC. If you want to try to fix your upgrade, what I would do is to first revert to your previous version (say 3.8.8.5) by activating that version. Then go version by version. 3.8.9, 3.8.9.1, and so on till the latest, and whenever you see a DB routine upgrade, you should perform them.
Be sure to take backup of your entire site and database always!

What you want is considered a code customization. The best way to solve your problem is by contacting a WPEC consultant at http://getshopped.org/consultant/ or if you want to do it yourself, you can use tool such as notepad++ to word search those words.

– Do you have a link to your premium support topics? There is a bug with our support forum (which is why it is under maintenance now), I suspect that there might be missing a few topics in it.I do appreciate the follow up. I now have other huge problems with my cart (users are not actually able to pay/checkout since I upgraded to the Gold Cart, which is bad.) I tried using my “Premium Support” token, but was again informed that I am not even able to use that until my initial forum comment gets approved. What a nightmare. There is no way to contact this company.
– Are you on WPEC 3894 and GC 2972? In order to post a premium topic for the first time, you need to be approved by a moderator (the support team). We dealt with hundreds of spam, therefore we need to use a human eye to filter those spam.I am sorry for the frustration.
