thanks for all your suggestions. Our webspace server admins/IT folks corrected the problem before I really tried anything else, and when I asked what the problem was they said they could not find any notes! I did have to ask them to update to PHP 5.0 in order to update to the latest WordPress version, but I was also able to log back into the dashboard BEFORE the upgrade so I don’t really understand what happened.

Prior updates installed with no problem but the last time it would not and I quite honestly do not know what the message was regarding the failure to update. If I could login to the dashboard I could answer these questions!
I have our server tech support folks also looking into the issue, I will post any updates.

As noted above, and a separate but perhaps related issue is that the wordpress dashboard login is not recognizing my email or login credentials.
