The backup in question was 416MB. I should add that the original problem was my site being hacked, despite having BruteProtect and BadBehavior running.
Both my daily and monthly backup routines were affected.
I’ve been in contact with Owain Cuvelier at Human Made support. He’s tried very hard to be helpful, but I think I’m beyond help at this point.

FIXED.
Had read an earlier topic on maximum number of variables allowed by the webhost affecting the number of menu items possible.
I removed six submenu items. I added back the three critical ones. Success.
I had been hoping there was newer information available as this ‘feature’ of WordPress has been an open issue since v3.0
