It´s been resolved!
The htaccess file was not correct –
sometimes it´s the simplest things 🙂

My host accepts the following index files in this order:
1. index.cgi
2. index.asp
3. index.php
4. index.shtml
5. index.html
6. index.htm
7. index.wml
8. index.pdf
Which should mean that the .php ending is not the cause of the problem!
