We had the same problem. It was caused by a .htaccess rule which was active in the background. The two solutions for us were
a) to rename the multisite website URL, or
b) to remove the .htaccess rule which caused our multisite website to malfunction.
Just wanted to post it here so that anyone having the same issue might be able to solve it this way.
