In reply to: [Favicon by RealFaviconGenerator] wsod after upgradeAlright! Don’t hesitate to report again if there is anything.
I’ve just updated the plugin (v1.2.15): this new version should work even if the FS access method is not “direct”.

Hey thank you for the feedback!
Such issue can happen from time to time. A DNS was probably down and an administrator fixed the issue a minute later.
Hi Vegard,
I’m sorry you have troubles with the plugin.
Apparently, this is a system issue: the machine that hosts your WordPress site cannot turn the “realfavicongenerator.net” domain name into an IP address.
How is your site hosted? If you use a provider, I suggest to contact its support team for more information.
Is your multi-site hosted the same way as your existing single site which was able to run the plugin successfully? If so, this is strange…

Thank you for your feedback!
apple-touch-icon-precomposed.pngis already part of the package. So this 404 comes from another problem: some devices (among them, some iOS devices) try to access/apple-touch-icon-precomposed.pngimplicitly, whatever the HTML says. And this file is not in the root directory of your site.To this regards, the plugin is “best effort”. It stores all files in a sub-directory in order to not mess up with your WordPress site (you probably don’t want to see 20-something files in the root of your local WordPress directory). In addition to this, it uses the WordPress Rewrite API to expose all these files in
/. For example, your site could have bothhttp://example.com/wp-content/uploads/fbrfg/favicon.icoandhttp://example.com/favicon.ico. If you use Apache, this method uses a.htaccessfile.But, the Rewrite API is unreliable. First, it is not always available, in particular when human-readable links are not activated. But most of all, the API sometimes silently fails because of some security plugins and/or hosting provider environments. Hard to investigate, and this is very environment-dependent. Each case is different. This is why I say the plugin is “best effort”: if the Rewrite API succeeds, good. Else, well, the icons work as promised, but your site misses the “implicit” URLs you notice in your log.
You can investigate this issue yourself (check your
.htaccess, disable your security plugins, etc.), but it clearly doesn’t worth it. Or you can copy the existingwp-content/uploads/fgrfb/apple-touch-icon-precomposed.pngto the root your your web site. Not recommended, but it you want to get rid of all the 404…Good! Next version of the plugin will be free from this limitation but at least you got the job done.
Thank you for the review! 🙂
