Well, that apparently worked, but the process was pretty funny. I added the upgrade.php phrase and wordpress came up with a message that “No upgrade required. Your wordpress database is already up to date.” I started to sigh, but then tried the next box which said “Continue”. I continued and everything was suddenly working fine. Tried it in several browsers and all seems to work. Guess WP just wanted to be asked!

    Anyhow, many thanks.

That sounds like a very good question but I don’t have a very good answer. What I did was delete all wordpress files on my server, and all wordpress files on my computer. Then I started over as a new installation. In the config file I gave it the name of the database that I have been using all along, and the username, password, etc. If that automatically upgrades the database, then I did that. If there is something else I should have done I just don’t know what that is. The theme comes up as does the header images, and I can call up any prior post from the dashboard, admin side, so that is all that I know. Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

No, I haven’t tried the host yet. The whole event was just bizarre. It seemed to start with my downloading a plugin that could save everything for me. (VM matrix) and then files scattered all over the place and what was supposed to be saved was just a mess of words and symbols. Makes me wonder if that program was carrying a virus.

But I deleted everything except the database which was tucked away on a program in the server’s cpanel, and seemed to be fine. Have now installed 3.4.1 from scratch, but have a couple of problems that may be related. No matter how I approach it I cannot put the new files directly in my root directory. When I try to upload even one individual file from the 3.4.1 program it immediately puts the wordpress folder up on the remote side and puts that file inside of it. I can access the blog (obviously) only by adding /wordpress to my URL and when I try to get in administratively (wp-admin) it says that something in the database must be changed first. (I suppose that could be the original URL). Anyhow, still a mess.

Thanks. I feel more hopeful now. Can’t imagine what started it though. Even my database password was changed when I looked at configsys.

Thanks for your message. The problem was related to this in that the namerservers were pointing to the firm that supplied my domain name and not the actual webhost.
