thank you for your response. I contacted my hosting company M2hosting and they fixed the problem by checking recommended NGINX configuration for WordPress.
If it helps someone – another symptom were not working page links in galleries with multiple pages. Everything else including WP permalinks was working so it was harder to find the problem.
