I’ve got the same concerns, plus I despise popups in general.
I expect the same functionality could be achieved with dynamic layers within the same page. I’ve got bookmarklets for blinklist.com and stikkit.com that already do that, so something akin to TinyMCE should have that coded soon (I hope).
I came here to look for exactly that.
